Rally is a multi-tenant concert operations, booking, ticketing, and door-management startup built for college campus and Greek-life live music events, connecting student chapters, production agencies, and student ticket buyers on one platform.
I collaborated with Rally to provide backend engineering and technical advisory capabilities, working on backend architecture and technical direction across the platform's portals (chapter, agency, admin, and public ticketing/door-scanning) alongside the team, on a stack of Next.js/React on the frontend and Python/FastAPI on the backend, deployed on AWS (ECS Fargate, RDS Postgres, SQS) with Stripe Connect for payments and payouts.
Some of the technical systems:
- Atomic inventory reservations without Redis: instead of standing up a separate in-memory cache layer to handle ticket cart holds under concurrent checkout traffic, we have race-condition-safe holds directly in Postgres using advisory locks scoped per buyer/event and row-level locking on the inventory record
- Asymmetric, on-device QR verification: Worked on an offline-tolerant QR verification pipeline where ticket tokens are signed via asymmetric cryptography (ECDSA) and verified directly in the client browser using the native Web Crypto API—avoiding network round-trips and protecting signing keys.
- Offline-tolerant door scanning: built for venues with unreliable WiFi, the scanning app keeps a local ticket manifest synced via periodic delta updates, and can operate fully offline for a bounded window if connectivity drops
- Native wallet pass generation: Apple Wallet (.pkpass) and Google Wallet pass generation from scratch, including the cryptographic signing required for Apple Wallet bundles, so tickets can live directly in a buyer's phone wallet rather than requiring a separate app
The door-scanning system was load tested to tens of thousands of ticket admissions under sustained concurrent scan traffic with no failures and low latency, validating it for real gate-rush conditions at high-attendance events.
Rally is currently on beta testing with real users.
